How to Play the Game

Read Claws’ Story

 Start by reading The Founding, where Claws learns the values that made America great—and discovers his mission.

Create the Government

With the kids as congress, decide who will be the President and the Court.  The president can veto a proposed law, but congress can appeal to the court for more insight, expansion, or overriding a veto (ie: the law is deemed constitutional)

Set Your Family Laws

 Sit together as a family and let your child come up with 3–5 “laws” they want to follow

  • Negotiate the Rewards
     An added layer of negotiating and excitement would be to have them negotiate rewards they will receive on “IndePresents Day” for following the laws.

Enforce the Laws (options for the parents)

  1. Claws “Watches” and Encourages
     Throughout the time period, Claws “watches” to see how well your child is following their laws. His presence adds encouragement and accountability. 
  2. Or the President watches for laws not being properly executed.  If the children disagree then can appeal to the court.

Celebrate Progress

 Throughout the game, reward good choices, spark conversations, and guide reflection. Talk about wins and challenges. 

    1. Or make it a Christmas in July “IndePresents Day” - opening presents on the 4th, celebrating America’s birthday!  .

Game Examples

Law:

“I will be kind to my sibling.”

Action:

If completed, Claws gives a thumbs up or a small reward card.

Reflection Prompt:

“What made you proud of yourself this week?”

Challenge Card:

“Help someone today without being asked.”
